Why is my energy bill higher than usual?

Why is my energy bill higher than usual?

1. Estimated vs actual readings

The number one culprit? Estimated usage.

If we haven’t had a recent meter reading, your bill might be based on an estimate— which could be higher than what you’ve actually used. The fix is simple:

submit a meter reading through the Share app or online and we’ll update your bill to reflect your actual usage. Easy.

2. More usage than you realise

Life changes—maybe you’ve been working from home more, had guests staying, or the kids have discovered the joy of 45-minute showers.

Even small changes can nudge your usage up.

3. Seasonal swings

Let’s face it—when it’s cold out, the heating’s on more. And when it’s warm? Fans, coolers, and ice cream machines (okay, maybe just us).

Comparing your winter bill to a summer one isn’t apples-to-apples. Look back at the same period last year for a better comparison.

4. Appliances that sneak energy

Did you know some devices keep drawing power even when they’re on standby? TVs, consoles, chargers, kitchen gadgets… they all add up.

Try switching off at the wall or using a smart plug to cut the flow completely.

Faulty appliances may also be major electricity vampires. A fridge with a wonky seal or an ancient tumble dryer might be guzzling more power than necessary. If they’re not working as they should, it might be time to show them the door.

5. Faulty wiring

This is probably the scariest item on this list but, yes, loose, frayed, or badly installed wires can cause your appliances to overwork, overheat, and overcharge your bills.

Worse still, they can pose serious risks like electrical fires or shocks – and that’s definitely not the kind of energy you want in your home.

If your bills still make you wince after ruling everything else out, it might be time to call in a qualified electrician. It’s not just about saving energy – it’s about keeping your home safe and sound.

6. Billing error (It happens, and we’ll fix it!)

We’re human. Occasionally a bill might have a glitch or a reading was wrong. If something looks off, tell us. We’d much rather double check than leave you worried.
