The EV revolution is here — but Northern Ireland risks being left behind
A future of clean, affordable transport is within reach — so why are we still stuck in neutral?
Electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t coming — they’re already here. With over a million on UK roads and new sales outpacing petrol and diesel, the momentum is undeniable. But here’s the problem: while the rest of the UK accelerates forward, Northern Ireland is being left stranded on the hard shoulder.
A raw deal for NI drivers
Despite record EV uptake elsewhere, drivers in Northern Ireland face some of the weakest infrastructure and policy support in the UK and Ireland. Public EV chargers are few and far between. Smart meter rollout — the backbone of flexible, future-ready energy systems — still hasn’t started. That means fewer options, higher costs, and a system that punishes early adopters rather than empowering them.
Let’s be blunt: consumers here deserve better. Northern Ireland has been underserved for too long. Without urgent action, we risk missing out on one of the biggest technological and environmental shifts of our time.
What’s at stake
This isn’t just about convenience or cleaner air. It’s about who gets to benefit from the energy transition — and who gets left behind.
EVs offer:
• Lower running costs
• Energy independence
• Huge potential to support the grid and lower bills through smart charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies
But without advanced metering, grid upgrades, and fair access to EV infrastructure, these benefits will remain out of reach for too many people here.
What needs to happen now
At Share Energy, we’re calling for:
• Faster rollout of smart meters across Northern Ireland to enable fairer, smarter tariffs
• Investment in public EV charging infrastructure to close the growing gap with GB and ROI
• EV-specific tariffs and incentives that support smarter charging and reward behaviour that benefits the grid
• Clearer communication and customer education, so drivers aren’t left in the dark
We’re not just watching this shift — we want to lead it. Share Energy was created to challenge the status quo. And we believe people in Northern Ireland deserve the same access, affordability and opportunity as everyone else.
We’re here to champion progress, fight for fairness, and help build an EV-ready energy system that works for everyone. Because the future should be shared — not hoarded.
