Raising energy-conscious kids: fun ways to teach the next generation to save power
Let’s be honest, children aren’t exactly known for turning off lights or unplugging devices but raising eco-conscious kids has become more crucial than ever.
At Share Energy, we believe in empowering families (pun intended!) to take small steps that make a big impact. Teaching your children about energy efficiency not only helps the planet but it also reduces household bills which is a win-win for everyone.
Here’s how to raise energy-conscious kids in a way that is fun, engaging and won’t lead to eyerolls (not guaranteed!)
-
Make it a game
Children love some friendly competition. Turn energy-saving into a challenge with these fun ideas:
-
The light patrol – assign your little one as the household’s official ‘Light Detective.’ If they catch someone leaving a light on in an empty room, they win a point. If they forget themselves? They lose a point!
-
Have a race to unplug unused devices before bedtime. The one who unplugs the most gets a point on their energy-saving chart.
-
At the end of the month, let them trade their points for a treat, a movie night, or an extra bedtime story.
-
Storytime with a spark
During your nighttime story routine why not weave in some energy-saving lessons
-
Read books that focus on eco-friendly habits and the power of small changes. Or why not let them use their imagination by creating your own stories. You could create a world where electricity is running out and it is up to your little one to save the day. Incorporate characters like Captain Switch-Off or the Energy Monster (who is waiting to steal electricity from devices not switched off!)
-
Set an example
Children learn by watching what we do. Demonstrating sustainable practices such as recycling, conserving energy, reducing waste, and choosing eco-friendly products sets a powerful example.
-
Make a habit of turning off lights, unplugging devices, and adjusting heating smartly – and let your children see it.
-
Show them how choosing energy-efficient options (like LED bulbs) really make a difference. When kids feel included, they take ownership of the habit.
-
Get crafty!
If your child loves some hands-on fun, then why not try some of these fun craft projects.
-
DIY solar ovens: use a pizza box and foil to make a mini solar cooker for melting s’mores.
-
Build a small windmill out of paper and straws to show how wind generates power.
-
Get your little one involved in sorting out recyclables and how they can reuse materials.
Remember, the more interactive it is, the more they will remember!
Teaching kids about energy-saving doesn’t have to be boring. By making it fun, engaging, and part of daily life, we can raise the next generation of energy-conscious heroes—who will (hopefully) grow up to switch off the lights without being reminded!
